It started back in 1968 when Gerald Harrell, founder of The Garden Center, became the 31st registered Landscape Architect in the state of Texas while working for Teas nursery in Houston, Texas. In the early seventies and through the early eighties Gerald owned a landscaping business in Houston, Landscapes Unlimited. Gerald's love for San Antonio and the hill country eventually inspired him to sell his business in Houston and move to San Antonio. Gerald moved to San Antonio and started The Garden Center with an old circus tent and a storage shed for an office on Bandera Road where Pep Boys Auto supply now stands. His goal and dream was to always offer his customers the very best quality plant material at the best possible price. His son Wayne worked on weekends in the beginning of The Garden Center while earning a batchelor's degree in business from Southwest Texas State. Wayne worked for Tru Green Lawn Care in Houston from 1988-1991 until moving to San Antonio in the fall of 1991 and began working full time at The Garden Center. In 1994, Gerald purchased the land where The Garden Center now stands and his goal of providing the best quality, the best prices and the best service is what keeps The Garden Center going. Scott Lunt started working at the Garden Center after high school graduation and later started his own landscaping business in Utah until he sold his business and moved back home to San Antonio in 2002. Scott is the manager of the landscape division and is very passionate about creating outdoor living environments at our customer's homes. Wayne left The Garden Center in 1998 and became a sales rep for Color Spot Nurseries until 2000 when he joined The Peace Corps as an agricultural and forestry volunteer in Haiti. Wayne came home to San Antonio in 2002 and went back to work at The Garden Center with Dear Old Dad. Gerald retired in 2007 and moved to New Mexico but still visits frequently and is still very involved in the business. His vision continues today and the Garden Center is very proud to be a part of the community in San Antonio. We believe The Garden Center's success is a result of our loyal customers, the talented people on our team and an undying passion for our industry. |
